BLUE LIGHT. What’s that all about?

Blue light is part of the visible light spectrum which is responsible for keeping you alert. While it’s naturally present in sunlight, it’s also found in the light emitted from your iPad screen. And it’s not always a good thing.

Some exposure to blue light is necessary — it penetrates your retinas, giving your brain a morning cue to wake up and seize the day. However, too much screen time can have a negative impact on our health and wellbeing, causing headaches, eye strain and fatigue, just to name a few.

Blue light also restricts the production of melatonin (a chemical that helps us sleep) which disrupts your natural sleep cycle and causes you to feel lethargic, irritable and unproductive. Not what anyone needs to function daily!

Can’t I just turn on the built-in blue light filter?

As you may know, iPads have their own built-in blue light filter called ‘Night Shift’ which changes the colour temperature of your screen to make it less stimulating. This is great for reducing and neutralising blue light to avoid exposure to the harmful rays that result in adverse side effects.

However, the problem with this feature is your screen will have a not-so-attractive orange glow that could disrupt your viewing. Night Shift mode may work well at night and when you’re planning to unwind but it’s not practical during the day if you’re doing colour sensitive work or need more light. Having this feature switched on reduces screen quality, so when you use built-in device solutions, you have to make a sacrifice.

How to know if your blue light filter is working?

Some people test their anti blue light products using a gimmicky blue light card. However, this doesn’t do the job. With any such product, we want to look at the blue light that’s absorbed and at what wavelengths.

It’s important to seek clarification via an official spectrometer report from a lab. Blue light is most harmful to eyes between 370-455nm. This can be damaging in the short-term, causing headaches and eye strain, and long-term, leading to eye diseases such as macular degeneration.

The majority of blue light from screens is emitted after 405nm, which means an iPad filter should limit harmful rays from this point onwards.

Blue light is a type of visible light with a shorter wavelength, making it emit higher energy. Blue light is not only given off by the sun but also by computer screens, smartphones, flat-screen televisions, and anything that has fluorescent and/or LED backlighting (which includes regular light bulbs btw!).

It is important to understand the effects of blue light because it is not only damaging to the eyes short term, but also long term. Short term blue light effects can make the eyes fatigued and dry. This can contribute to the symptoms of throbbing pain around the eyes - some even suffer from itchy/”burning” eyes. The long term blue light effects can decrease the pigment in the centre part of the vision known as the macula. This can increase the risk of development of macular degeneration - and even blindness.

The sun can actually radiate more blue light than screens. However, with the increasing amount of time in front of/staring directly at screens, we’re starting to see it affect a lot more eyes than the sun. Using blue light filter glasses or screen protectors can help to decrease the amount of blue light that enters the cornea, lens or retina.

Now more than ever, sleep is becoming a major factor in our health and wellness. Sleep is not only important to give our body rest but it also gives our brain a chance to flush out toxins that have accumulated throughout the day, which can only be done when we are asleep.

We’ve all heard that phones and screens before bedtime are a big no! But do you know the science behind this? We have a helpful hormone in our body called melatonin, which is secreted in the dark, causing us to become tired and sleepy. In the morning as the sun rises and there is more light, melatonin stops being produced by our body which causes us to wake up! Our laptop or phone screens emit a particular type of light called “blue light”, which stops the production of melatonin. And without melatonin, our sleep quality is greatly compromised!

So how does this affect our body’s overall health? Recent research is showing us that sleep quality also plays a huge role in weight management. Studies are showing us that the less we sleep, the more hunger hormone (ghrelin) is produced and the less satiety hormone (leptin) is secreted. This causes us to eat much more after a night or two of bad sleep. Not only do we overeat because of this imbalance of hormones, but the research is showing we also don’t make the best food choices when our body is in this state! We are more likely to snack and eat energy dense, high carb and saturated fat foods. This can cause weight gain and also long term, can have other implications on our overall health.

The screen protector is very effective. It is used by my seven year old, that gets very affected by blue light,on his school device. I will buy more for the entire household because I see a difference in his behaviour .It looks purple when the screen is off but when in use it does not affect colour at all! Easy to install. Customer service was super helpful and fast. We had messed up with the installation the first time and they replaced it quickly and pain free.

There’s room for improvement. My direction is towards the fact that with an illuminated backdrop or ambient light, the screen is obscured and also super reflective of the user’s own details and surroundings, and I also noticed its prone to smudges and often needs to be tidied. Apart from that, the protector seems solid and I hope it will hold out for a while.

This is the second screen protector I have bought due to the fact my iPad was faulty and I had a new one. My husband had my previous screen protector as I couldn’t keep it to transfer to my new one. It is a more stable surface than my last blocker. I had to adjust it a couple of times as I applied it and could do it easily. I was able to apply it with no bubbles! I don't think I will have the peeling edge problem I had with my last blocker either since this is more like a piece of acetate. Very happy with my purchase.

My first shipment was damaged by post office When delivering. Customer service with Occushield very prompt in responding and getting a replacement to me right away.

Anti blue light screen protector for iPad - iPad Pro 12.9" (2018-2022)

I have only just received my screen protector so cannot comment on how it is working. I contacted customer services about my first order and they promptly dealt with my query, sending out a replacement immediately. Customer Services was exemplary and a 5 star service. 3 stars review on screen protector only because I haven't used it yet.
